Corsica, with its stunning landscapes and challenging trails, is a hiker’s paradise. In 2018 I embarked on an exhilarating three-week hiking expedition from the north to the south of Corsica, an adventure that combined breathtaking scenery, unexpected challenges, and unforgettable moments. In this blog post, I will recount my incredible journey, sharing the highs, lows, and everything in between.
Our journey began with an affordable bus ride to Paris, followed by a flight to Calvi and a train ride to the starting point of the famous GR20 trail. The excitement was palpable as we hiked into the mountains on the very first day, watching the sea gradually recede into the distance.
The initial two days were strenuous, covering two stretches each day. Unfortunately, my friend sustained an injury, prompting us to rest on the third day and reassess our approach.
On the fourth day, my friend opted to take a bus to recover, while I embraced the challenge and embarked on a perilous climb to the highest mountain in Corsica. The ascent was treacherous, and the presence of fresh snow added to the danger. However, fate smiled upon me when I encountered a helpful Scotsman, and together we conquered the peak, sharing an unforgettable experience.
Following the arduous climb, the trails gradually became flatter and more manageable. Despite the initial hardships, the breathtaking scenery kept our spirits high, and we were soon rewarded with spectacular panoramic views of Corsica. The cold mountain night that had greeted us earlier in the journey was now replaced by a mesmerizing sunrise, illuminating the mountainous landscapes in hues of gold and pink.
As we continued our hike, we noticed a shift in the trail’s ambiance, with more tourists joining us along the way. The charm of Corsica was still ever-present, but the newfound camaraderie with fellow adventurers added a unique dimension to the experience.
The three-week hike from the north to the south of Corsica was an adventure of a lifetime, a blend of physical challenges, natural beauty, and unexpected encounters. From the initial steep climbs to the flatter, more touristy paths, every part of the journey left an indelible mark on my soul. Corsica, with its diverse landscapes and rugged terrain, beckons every avid hiker to explore its hidden gems and embrace the awe-inspiring adventure it offers.
